FastStone Image Viewer is the program that is used as the basic tool for our Digital Camera and Photo & Image Editing courses. It is free for non-commercial usage. With each new version, additional features have been added and it has become far more than just a viewer and organiser of pictures. It is a first class photo editor with many tools for adjusting pictures and creating artistic effects too, if you wish.
The Screen Capture tool is very easy to operate, enabling you to copy any portion of a screen or window and then edit and save it as an image file, all within FastStone Image Viewer. Instructions for using the Screen Capture tool are further down this page.

How to use the FastStone Screen Capture tool
- Start the program (Web browser, PDF Reader, etc.) that displays the item you wish to capture and use it to open the document, web page or image that is to be captured. Then start FastStone Image Viewer.
- In FastStone Image Viewer, click the Screen Capture icon
or, on the Menu, click File > Screen Capture.
In the pop-up menu, look at the bottom of the menu to see the three options of places to send the screen-clip. There should be a tick in front of To Image Viewer. If not, click in the box to place the tick and then click again on the Screen Capture icon to reopen the menu.
- Decide which of the five choices of screen capture you require and click on it. The FastStone window vanishes, leaving you with the document or image from which you want to clip something.
Note: "Capture Rectangle Region" is a good choice for a practice exercise.
- Move the mouse pointer to one corner (e.g. top-left) of the area you want to capture. Hold down the mouse button and drag the pointer to the opposite corner (bottom-right) of the area required. Release the mouse button.
- When the mouse button is released, the selection is transferred to FastStone Image Viewer, ready for editing, saving or printing.
