There are thousands of handy utility programs that can make managing and writing documents and other files quicker or easier. The half-dozen programs listed here are just a sample of what is available.
OpenOffice.org –
is an excellent office suite consisting of a word processor, spreadsheet, draw and paint module, presentation maker (like PowerPoint), database and maths equation generator.
As well as its own file formats it can read and write Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Spread32 –
is an Excel-compatible spreadsheet program. If you don't have Excel on your computer and you don't need the full OpenOffice.org Suite, use Spread 32. It is able to make, edit, display and print spreadsheets (including multi-sheet "workbooks"). ► View a screenshot and instructions and download.
Thunderbird –
is a first class email program from Mozilla (the Firefox people). It is easy to install and use. Like Firefox it has lots of add-ons that you can choose – for example, an integrated calendar, appointments and task manager that pops up appointment reminders for you. Another excellent add-on is a tabbed web browser that opens instantly within the email message panel whenever you click a hyperlink in an email. It can handle multiple email accounts, multiple address lists and can send group emails.
Memento –
is for making jottings on coloured post-it style notes that sit on your screen.
They can be hidden as required or reduced to a slim title bar that you drag out of the way of your work.
You can change the colour and transparency of each note.
Contents can be copied and pasted into other documents.
They are saved automatically and are available for as long as you wish.

Eraser –
erases unwanted files completely and scrubs clean the areas of the disk formerly occupied by confidential documents, etc.

AllwaySync –
If you need to maintain files on a USB Flash Drive, or a removable hard drive, or between two computers, here's a really smart way to do the job.
AllwaySync checks the files in selected folders on two computers (or two drives on one computer). It identifies the most recent version of each file and replaces any old or missing files with the latest version.
If two matching documents are of equal age they will be left unchanged.

AM DeadLink –
checks your Internet Browser's Favorites list for errors. It reports any broken links and any redirected connections, thus allowing you update the information and maintain an effective list of favourite web sites.

pdf995 –
enables you to convert Word, Excel, Publisher and other documents into PDF format.
You write your document with your usual program and, using pdf995, it is saved as a PDF file, ready for sending. It can be sent as an email attachment, or as a file on a floppy disk, CD or USB Flash Drive. It can be viewed on a web site and downloaded or printed from there.
