Duration and cost of the Course

  • There are 5 two-hour lessons.
  • The cost of the course, including the manual and program CD is $60.00

Prerequisites

  • You must have completed both the Introduction to Computers course and the Computing Skills course.

Essential equipment

There are three items which you must bring to each lesson and have available for practising skills in between lessons.
  • A digital camera
  • The cable which connects your camera to the computer.
  • The camera handbook

By the end of the course you should be able to –

  • turn on the camera
  • take a series of shots using white balance and note the difference
  • make a folder in My Pictures to hold the photos
  • copy or move the photos from your camera to the chosen folder on your computer
  • take photos with and without flash
  • use the zoom (digital/optical)
  • choose and use the appropriate mode for each type of photo – landscape, portrait, macro, etc.
  • Review photos on the camera's screen, and delete those you decide not to keep

What program is used in this course?

We use the free image editing program, FastStone Image Viewer. This is a modern, easily used image viewer and editor that enables you to quickly browse through a batch of photos, making any of a good range of adjustments and enhancements.

What resources will I receive?

  • the manual Digital Photography – Use your Camera and Computer to Make Great Pictures.

  • a CD containing the setup file for you to install FastStone Image Viewer on your own computer. Then you can practise at home, using the same program as you use in class.
