Prerequisites – courses and equipment

  • Completion of these courses:
    1. Introduction to Computers and
    2. either Computing Skills or Word Processing.

  • The principles and general operation of File Management are similar for all Windows computers. However the details vary between Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

    The diagrams and details in this course are taken from Windows Vista and your coach will explain the variations that you can expect to see.

  • In order to be able to complete the exercises you will need to bring a USB Flash Drive (also called Memory Stick, Pen Drive, Jump Drive or Thumb Drive).

  • Choosing the order in which files will be listed on screen

Reorganising files and folders

  • Creating new folders and moving files into them
  • Moving and copying files and folders, using several different methods
  • Deleting files
  • Renaming files
  • File size and disk space
  • Viewing file properties
  • Finding files on the hard disk, CD, or USB Flash Drive using the Explorer Search function
  • Managing folders and sub-folders

File compression

  • Compressing files and folders
  • Viewing the contents of a compressed (zipped) archive
  • Extracting files that have been zipped
  • Zipping and e-mailing files directly from Windows Explorer

Opening programs and files from Windows Explorer

  • Open programs directly from Windows Explorer
  • Choose which of several programs to use when opening a file
