During the Level One course you used a single-layer photo editing program. That is, there was a "canvas" on which the photo, captions, drawing and any other elements were placed.
In this Level Two course you will use a multi-layer image editing program. There is a background layer over which one or more other layers can be placed, enabling the additional items to be changed, resized or moved about at any time. This enables you to create a wider range of composite pictures and artistic effects.
Specific skills in this course are:
- Linking Paint.NET with FastStone Image Viewer
- Setting canvas size and positioning image on canvas
- Concept of layered images, visible and transparent
- Adding new layers to an image
- Reordering layers and merging layers
- Creating layered masques
- Using the "Effect" tools to modify images and layers within images
- Modifying selections within images
- "Framing" images
- Using the "Mode" function with Paint.NET
- Making postcards with captions and other text in separate layers
- Making composite pictures with layered components for easy adjustment at subsequent editing sessions
- Resizing the canvas and using the additional area for titles, captions and other text or images
- Making transparent GIFs or PNGs and layering them over a background, editing the relative sizes of the components
- Adjusting the colour balance and other effects of individual layers in a composite picture to create attention-getting posters
- Saving pictures in both PDN (Paint Dot Net) format and as JPG and PNG files
